Time Travel with Cinnamon Bark EO!

Opening a bottle of Cinnamon Bark essential oil might be the best form of time travel we know. The warm aroma immediately transports you to a night sipping hot cider by the light of a bonfire or a bright Christmas morning, eating a cinnamon roll fresh from the oven. We all have our own history that’s stirred up by the sweet scent of cinnamon, but this sought-after spice has an interesting story of its own—as well as uses that go far beyond baked goods!

1. It comes from a tree.

Just in case the “bark” part of the name didn’t give it away, all cinnamon—not just our oil—comes from the bark of a tree! Cinnamon trees are in the genus Cinnamomum. Our Cinnamon Bark oil comes from Cinnamomun zeylanicum, a tropical evergreen native to Sri Lanka.

2. And it’s different from the cinnamon in your spice rack.

Here’s where Cinnamon Bark essential oil differs from the cinnamon sticks in your cider or ground cinnamon in your french toast. Cinnamon Bark oil is distilled from the outer bark of the cinnamon tree. The cinnamon you buy in the spice section at the grocery store is made from the inner bark, which is harvested in rolls and then dried out.

3. But it still tastes incredible.

4. It’s great for topical application—but remember to dilute.

Cinnamon Bark is a “hot” oil, which means it causes a warming sensation on your skin. That’s important to remember when you use this oil topically, because you don’t want to ruin a should-be-cozy moment with a negative skin reaction! We recommend diluting Cinnamon Bark oil 1:1 with a carrier oil and doing a patch test before you dive in to topical use.

Here are some of our favorite topical Cinnamon Bark oil usage tips so that you can get the most out of its warming properties:

  • Mix three drops of Cinnamon Bark oil with some V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex, and use it for a warming foot massage. Then put on a pair of warm socks to keep your feet cozy and moisturized! We recommend completing the picture with a nice book, a cozy fireplace, and a warm mug of herbal tea—but we’ll leave those details up to you!
  • Treat yourself to a warming scalp massage with four drops of Cinnamon Bark and a dime-sized amount of your favorite hair-loving carrier oil. Our favorite for this use is coconut oil. Using your fingers, massage the sweetly scented blend into your scalp for several minutes. Then wash and dry your hair as usual.
  • Give tired muscles and joints some TLC—Treatment Laced with Cinnamon. Add a few drops of Cinnamon Bark oil to your favorite massage oil. Then relax and let the aroma wrap you up in comfort.

5. And it makes your house smell good enough to eat.

All About Orange

Orange essential oil is certainly a favorite in our house! We use it often in the diffuser by itself or with other oils.
It is a favorite of Leven's certainly, her go to for any aromatherapy she's got going on in her room. 

I love using it in the kitchen. When mixed with honey it makes an amazing way to sweeten fruit salad.

Citrus Yogurt Dip with Essential Oils

Last week was my daughter's 11th birthday and she had a small party with a few friends. She is a meticulous party planner (already) and therefore she had special requests for the menu. The day arrived and I got to work in the kitchen preparing the food that afternoon. 

The crew arrived off the school bus hungry as usual and so I prepared for them a fruit platter with a yogurt dip. The fruit and dip were devoured in minutes and was super delicious so I wanted to share the recipe here for you all because it was so easy! 

Citrus Yogurt Dip

1 c plain yogurt
1 tbsp honey
1-2 drops each Lime, Lemon, Grapefruit Essential Oils
(you can use Orange too, but I was out unfortunately!)

Directions: Blend together yogurt, honey and essential oils. Serve. It's that easy!!

The best part about having essential oils in the kitchen (besides the wonderful health benefits) is that I didn't need to have all those different fruit juices in my refrigerator. Essential Oils have an unlimited shelf life if stored properly which makes them so easy to use. And it only takes a few drops or less to spice up, season or juice up your dishes, which makes the oils very economical!

Spice It Up! Using Essential Oils in the Kitchen

Has it been getting a little stale? Has there been moaning at the table? Is everyone looking for something just a bit spicier? Well, you can spice it up and increase the healthy aspect at the same time!

A “healthier lifestyle” way of eating starts with our food preparation.

We are all trying to do everything right - we are shopping for organic and locally raised food to ensure we get the best for our bodies and are preparing more meals at home using those fresh ingredients. And, while food must be healthy and nourishing it must also be sensual.

So, we often reach for seasonings and spices to flavor the dishes we prepare. But, those dried herbs lose up to 90% of their healing nutrients, therefore they offer very little benefit other than flavor. What if, instead, you reach for the essence of the plant, not only flavoring the dish, but adding a therapeutic and increased wellness to your already healthy dishes?

A properly distilled essential oil is 50-70 times more therapeutically potent than fresh or dried herbs. They have a chemical structure that is similar to human cells and tissues. This makes them compatible with human protein and enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body. Adding essential oils also increases the ion exchange in the cells of the foods, increasing the cell surface and allowing more oxygen uptake that enhances greater enzyme function. Essential oils are known for their energizing and sliming effects, so adding them to your diet daily is very beneficial in so many ways.

What a novel idea!

Using essential oils in food is not a new idea, there are in fact thousands of food products that use essential oils for aroma and flavor, such as chewing gum, chocolates, candies and many more.

Another benefit of using essential oils in your recipes is the relatively small amount that you need to use to flavor your dishes. It literally takes only a few drops to season an entire recipe that serves four people. Just 2 drops of an essential oil is equivalent to 2 ounces of dried herbs. Having essential oils in your pantry is like having a garden in constant full bloom and you don’t have to pull any weeds!

So which essential oils should we have in our pantry?

There is of course, the obvious choices such as oregano, black pepper, nutmeg and basil, there is also a wide range of oils you can use for baking or in beverages. You can include essential oils in many of your favorite recipes. Add lemon, rosemary, clove, or peppermint to give wonderful flavor to salad dressings. Season cakes, frostings, puddings, and fruit pies, or enhance herbal tea with lemon, lavender, clove or peppermint. For a cold drink that even children will love, add lemon or peppermint to a pitcher of iced, mineral water and honey as an alternative to sweetened sodas. Flavor honey by stirring in the essential oil of your choice and adding it to your favorite recipe. I recently made a batch of Squash Soup using fresh butternut squash and nutmeg and clove essential oils. It was delicious, healthy and I was able to freeze some to eat later. Because the food you eat directly impacts the way you look and feel, incorporating essential oils into your daily diet can make it easier to obtain remarkable results – adding spice and increased nutrition to every meal.

This healthful and delicious essential oil-infused soup recipe is sure to be a hit with your friends and family. It includes Young Living’s Clove, Cinnamon Bark, and Nutmeg essential oils. Try this recipe for Butternut Squash Soup for your next meal.


2 tablespoons olive oil

 2 onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 pounds butternut squash, peeled and cubed
4 cups vegetable broth
2 dropsClove essential oil
3 dropsNutmeg essential oil
1 dropCinnamon Bark essential oil


In soup pan, sauté onions, garlic, salt, and pepper in olive oil over medium heat until tender. Add cubed squash and cook for 3–5 minutes. Next, add vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Boil on medium-high heat for 25 minutes or until squash is fork tender. Remove from heat. Using a hand mixer, puree until smooth. Stir in the essential oils. Allow oils to infuse into soup for 5–8 minutes and then serve. The soup may be garnished with a spoonful of yogurt if desired.

This recipe makes about 5 ½ cups of soup.

I know it's Monday, but don't let that stop you from pampering yourself a little! Here are some ways to de-stress, unwind and take care of you-know-who!!

1. Let the birds wake you up.

There is nothing harsher to the body and mind at rest than the piercing shrill of an alarm clock to wake it out of its restorative sleep. The penetrating sound of a noisy alarm can start the day off on a stressful note... and you haven't even gotten out of bed yet!

Open your window and tune yourself into the soft hum of natural bird sounds in between 5 to 6am. The sounds and vibrations of the birds at this hour are positive subliminal frequencies that can balance your energy system. Rub your favorite Young Living Essential Oil Blend on the soles of your feet - before you get out of bed in the morning.

2. Take a morning walk.

It is said that the morning dew holds a special frequency that can revitalize your energy field, especially if you walk on the dew-ridden grass. The other benefits of the morning walk are that it can lower your stress level before you even get started for the day. It also gives you a chance to organize your thoughts, plan and visualize your day. Latte Came Home! Celebrating National Coffee Day

Do you LOVE coffee?? I mean ~  need it, want it, crave it? Well so do I.

If you are like me you came to love coffee later in life, as an adult (I was around 25), when your taste buds are more mature and well seasoned. I have never liked my coffee black, no sir, I needed it to taste more like hot chocolate than coffee really. As the years have gone by I have lighted up quite a bit on the creamy sweetness but they still grace my cup each morning along with my joe.

I have not been to a coffee shop in years, lamenting a bit now and then when I pass one, because I love lattes. But with the knowledge of pesticide ridden coffee beans, artificial flavors and hormones in the cream, I became accustomed to making my own at home and being grateful to have the money to afford organic beans, organic sugar and hormone free cream.

Until about a year ago…. I will no longer feel a sense of longing or loss as I pass the coffee shop. Because the latte came home. I was brave enough to try "the latest craze" – Butter Coffee. And am I glad I did!

“Why?” some might ask, would you want to add such things as butter and coconut oil to your coffee?

Well, I “heard” that it helps with mental clarity, helps you feel full in the morning (I’m one who tends to skip breakfast) and is another way to get some of those 4 tablespoons of coconut oil daily that’s recommended in our diets.

So, here’s my Butter Coffee recipe:

12 oz hot fresh brewed organic coffee
(note of caution: I can’t go any higher on the amount of coffee I put in the blender or else it goes shooting out all over the kitchen, so just a word of caution to proceed carefully if trying to make a double batch or something)

1 tsp unsalted hormone free butter (grass fed only)*

1 tbsp unrefined organic coconut oil

a dash of vanilla and organic sugar, agave, honey or stevia to taste

For that Pumpkin Latte taste add a drop of Thieves Essential Oil. You'll find a wonderful cinnamon flavor that also boosts immune systems responses

Add all ingredients to the blender. Blend for 30 seconds. Drink up!

Who needs to get some sleep?

I was sleeping again and never was groggy in the morning. The National Institutes of Health has a website devoted to Valerian for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders. Just as an aside, I'm a big fan of 19th century Russian literature and one of my favorite writers is Anton Chekhov, who was actually a country doctor as well as a writer. In one of his plays, The Sea Gull, the doctor in the play named Dorn asks his patient if he'd like some Valerian drops for his insomnia. So this has been a traditional remedy. Valerian Root is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for ingestion by the FDA. I would just make sure the oil ingested is therapeutic grade. Always Have A GREAT Day!

In this issue, I will be sharing a little information about Aromatherapy and the essential oil blends of Harmony, Joy, White Angelica, and Valor. An oil blend is created when two or more single oils are combined. Each of the aforementioned blends was formulated to maximize the synergistic effect. 

Aromatherapy is the inhalation of plant oils, called essential oils, for improved physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Essential oils are the pure essence of the plant—often referred to as nature's living energy—and can provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly. Essential oils can be used on their own for aromatherapy or with complementary natural ingredients, such as vegetable or carrier oils.

Aromatherapy for Improved Health and Wellness
Aromatherapy is one of many ways you can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. When practicing aromatherapy it's vital that only pure, undiluted essential oils are used. Synthetic, perfume-grade products lack the necessary level of beneficial constituents and offer little or no positive effect. Products that include synthetic ingredients are frowned upon in holistic aromatherapy. It is important to remember that perfume oils (also known as fragrance oils) are NOT the same as essential oils. Fragrance oils and perfume oils contain synthetic chemicals and do not provide the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. You will get little or no positive benefits unless you use the pure, therapeutic grade.

Consumer Beware: There is no regulation of the use of the word "aromatherapy" on packaging, labeling or in advertising - in other words, any product can be marketed as a product suitable for aromatherapy. There are a number of products on the market that contain unnatural ingredients including fragrance oils and claim to be aromatherapeutic. This is simply not the case. Be assured, by using pure Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ (YLTG) essential oils you will have the highest quality oil available to create the proper mood, state of mind, or improve your physical well-being.

Now, here's the information on the four oils blends I promised. With special thanks to Vicki Opfer from Arvada, Colorado for sharing this protocol. Vicki calls this her "Always Have A Great Day Protocol" using the following therapeutic grade essential oils:

Harmony (oil blend)

An exquisite blend that promotes physical and emotional well-being by bringing harmonic balance to the energy centers of the body. The liberating, balancing, and calming essential oils in this blend open us to new possibilities while contributing to an overall feeling of well-being. Harmony oil blend brings a harmonic balance to the energy centers of the body using lavender, sandalwood, and ylang ylang essential oils. Rub Harmony on the energy centers to allow negative energy to escape.

Joy (oil blend)

A luxuriously exotic blend with uplifting overtones that creates magnetic energy and brings joy to the heart. When worn as cologne or perfume, Joy exudes an alluring and irresistible fragrance that inspires romance and togetherness. When diffused, it can be refreshing and uplifting. Diffuse this oil for a refreshing, uplifting effect.

White Angelica (oil blend)

A calming and soothing blend that encourages feelings of protection and security. It combines oils used during ancient times to enhance the body's aura, which brings about a sense of strength and endurance. Many people use it as protection against negative energy. White Angelica works great applied to shoulders.

Valor (oil blend)

When applied to the feet, spine and neck, this blend of spruce, blue tansy, rosewood and frankincense supports the muscular and skeletal systems of the body. Valor has gained respect from chiropractors, who find it beneficial when applied on a client before and after an adjustment. Valor has been known to help those who suffer from stage fright, anxiety, and extreme tension, by rubbing a few drops onto the hands and breathing deeply. To create a deeper sleep, rub on the bottoms of your feet before bed.

One final note! 
Here’s the protocol I referenced:
Valor – one drop on one wrist. Hold the other wrist to it.
Harmony – single drop over the solar plexus.
Joy – single drop over the heart.
White Angelica – single drop in one hand. Rub hands together. Start with crown of head brush down the body.

I've added some additional information about Valor (see below). Valor is such an empowering blend of spruce, rosewood, blue tansy, and frankincense.

Understanding the Grades of Essential Oils

The Essential oils in Young Living's collection are life-enhancing gifts from the plant kingdom, revered for centuries for their restorative properties to body, mind, and spirit.

Essential Oil Basics 
Essential oils are the highly concentrated, volatile, aromatic essences of plants. Essential oils contain hundreds of organic constituents, including hormones, vitamins and other natural elements that work on many levels. They are 75 to 100 times more concentrated than the oils in dried herbs.

All the countries of the world provide essential oils, making aromatherapy a truly global therapy, and information on the specific properties of each essential oil can be found in any one of the hundreds of books published worldwide on the topic.

Understanding the Grades of Oils 
There are significant differences between synthetic fragrance oils and pure essential oils. All Young Living Essential Oils are pure. There are 4 grades of essential oils.

  • Grade A oils are pure therapeutic quality and are usually made from organically grown plants, and are distilled at the proper temperatures.
  • Grade B oils are food grade, they may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils.
  • Grade C are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as food grade oils. They usually contain solvents which are used to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents are not healthy.
  • Floral Water is a byproduct of the distillation process, a very high quality, IF it comes from a Grade A distillation process. Accordingly, it is a low quality if it comes from poor quality raw materials and/or poor distillations processes.

Synthetic fragrance oils may duplicate the smell of the pure botanical, but the complex chemical components of each essential oil created in nature determine its true benefits. In other words, synthetic fragrance oils will not have the medicinal properties; they are NOT suitable for aromatherapy.

Pure essential oils, like precious jewelry or fine wine, are gems of nature -- the quintessential life force of aromatic plants, sometimes called the "soul" of the plant. People who truly appreciate the qualities of pure essential oils consider each drop a precious jewel to be savored, enjoyed and protected.

Essential oils are absorbed into the fluid surrounding the cells beneath the skin's surface for a variety of effects including deep cleansing, nourishing, rejuvenating and balancing. Essential oils also diffuse into the air to provide olfactory benefits.

Bacteria or Virus? Whats the difference?

They can both cause similar symptoms and make you feel miserable. But that’s where the similarities end.

Bacteria: a single-celled organism that can multiply rapidly.

Virus: isn’t really alive….its a fragment of DNA or RNA that’s surrounded by a protective layer of protein, which is capable of latching onto healthy cells and injecting its genetic material. Once inside, it hijacks the cell’s machinery, redirecting it to produce the virus.

Thieves® Oil Blend was created based on research of a group of 15th century thieves in France who protected themselves by rubbing down with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims.

This Young Living proprietary blend was university tested and found to be highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health. This proprietary blend has also been documented to kill over 99.96% of bacteria it comes into contact with.


Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) has a sweet, spicy fragrance that is stimulating and revitalizing. An important ingredient in Thieves® Blend due to its wonderful immune-enhancing features, its principal constituent is eugenol, an element that is used in the dental industry to numb gums. Clove is the highest-scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on the ORAC scale.

Lemon (Citrus limon) has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune function. It helps promote leukocyte formation and lymphatic function.


Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum) has the wonderful cinnamon scent loved around the world. Warming and stimulating, it is comforting during the cold season. Many people find it highly romantic. Historically, cinnamon was so popular it was the main reason behind the occupation of Ceylon by first the Portuguese, then the Dutch and then the British.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata) is cooling, refreshing and energizing. Lighter in smell than Eucalyptus globulus, it nevertheless has many of the same health-supporting properties. Because it is relatively gentle and non-irritating, it is the preferred choice for children. This variety is one of the most versatile of the eucalyptus oils and is suitable for topical use, diffusing, and even direct inhalation. It has long been an ingredient in some of our most popular blends.

Rosemary* (Rosmarinus officinalis CT cineol) has a fresh, herbaceous, sweet, slightly medicinal aroma. An energizing oil, it may be beneficial for helping to restore mental alertness when experiencing fatigue.

Would you allow a child to play in a chemical laboratory?

Would you allow a child to play in a chemical laboratory? Of course not. Yet most households contain at least 20 toxic chemicals - all more or less accessible to children.

Even if the products come in with 'child-proof' caps or are stored away from children, these chemicals are a danger just by their very presence.

Whenever you spray an ammonia or bleach based cleaner or disinfectant, use furniture polish, air freshners, oven cleaner, paint, remove paint or clean the bathroom the common cleaners – it releases countless toxins into the air our families breathe.

And even sitting on a shelf these chemicals are a danger. Chemicals react to heat, movement and age. They get more concentrated and less safe the longer they sit there. And let's not forget the environment; chemicals destroy life.

So do we live with filthy homes? Of course not. But let's look at some safer alternatives to a clean and green home.

Here is a list of my favorite natural and organic cleaners, disinfectants, scouring powders, etc. to stock the cleaning cupboard. They are inexpensive, non-toxic and effective. 


Young Living has a wonderful all purpose non-toxic natural concentrated cleaner called Thieves Household Cleaner. This product is 100% plant and mineral based, it is infused with YL’s Thieves blend of essential oils. If you have never heard of the story of YL’s Thieves oil, it is an interesting one.

In modern days, these same herbs and essential oils have been found to be an effective barrier against topical and airborne microorganisms.

Baking soda is one of the seven wonders of the cleaner world. It is the definitive multi-tasker. It neutralizes and removes odors, purifies, absorbs moisture, scours and scrubs, polishes, disinfects and cleans. It can be used for almost any cleaning job you have, from clearing a clogged drain to adsorbing odor in diaper pails, litter boxes and stinky shoes. It cleans soap scum from porcelain and ceramic tiling and fiberglass without scratching.

The best news is that it is very inexpensive. I found over 25 ways to use it!

Vinegar  For centuries peoples around the globe have known about the amazing properties of common white vinegar. The acids in vinegar can cut grease and remove the most stubborn dirt and grime.

I do not know anyone that likes to clean, but the end result is wonderful. Many of the products you clean with contain toxins, which you are inhaling and ingesting through your skin and lungs, eyes and nose. Homemakers are finding new ways to eliminate sources of pollution that threaten the health of their families. Using a non-chlorinated, non perfumed, dye free biodegradable cleaner is good for the environment inside your home and outside.

It is better to clean with products that are non-toxic yet effective. Keeping these safe cleaning products around will be a great help and could save lives in the end.
